Distinguished and Famous people from Beaumaris Coast
Beaumaris has been a home for people who painted its atmosphere, pursued literary careers and helped defend the wider bay. The coastal connection is often visible in their work as well as their former addresses.
🎨 Clarice Beckett
Clarice Beckett lived in Beaumaris and painted the surrounding beaches, roads and changing light. Working outdoors with equipment carried on a homemade cart, she found subjects in places that others might have passed without a second glance. Her training with Max Meldrum encouraged close attention to tonal relationships. She kept exhibiting despite few sales and dismissive responses from many critics; later public-gallery collecting helped establish the importance of her work.
🎨 Arthur Boyd
Arthur Boyd moved with his wife Yvonne to a Beaumaris weatherboard home in 1955. The next year he began an association with Australian Galleries that provided a more regular income for his work. The period also included coastal visits to Sorrento, which recalled his earlier experiences at Rosebud. His Beaumaris residence belongs to the years before the family went to England. It is a local chapter in an artistic life shaped by several Australian landscapes.
📚 John Iggulden
Novelist and glider pilot John Iggulden lived in Beaumaris during the 1960s and 1970s. He became the founding president of the Port Phillip Conservation Council, alongside work in the family engineering firm and a literary career. His novels include Breakthrough and The Clouded Sky. A former national gliding champion, he pursued interests ranging from technical flight to the protection of the bay. His papers, preserved by the University of South Carolina, record that unusually broad working life.
