Local History of Beaumaris Coast in Victoria, Australia

Beaumaris Coast is a region located in the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is bordered by Black Rock to the north, Cheltenham to the east, Mentone to the south, and Port Phillip Bay to the west. The area has a rich and diverse history that has influenced its development over the years.

Indigenous People and Early Settlement

The indigenous people of the land we now call Beaumaris Coast were the Boon Wurrung and the Woiwurrung. They lived off the land and the sea, hunting and fishing in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. It is believed that the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung people made summer camps along the coast, where they would catch fish, collect shellfish and find fresh water.

The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1850s. They were mostly farmers and fishermen who established small homesteads and fishing villages. The area was known for its fertile soil, which was suitable for agriculture, and its abundant fish stocks, which attracted many fishermen.

Growth and Development

During the 20th century, the area experienced significant growth and development. In the 1920s and 1930s, many wealthy Melbourne residents built holiday homes along the coast, attracted by the beautiful beaches and pristine natural environment. The development of the electric train line in the 1910s made the area more accessible and allowed for further growth and development.

During the post-World War II period, the area became more residential, as many people moved from the city to the suburbs. New housing estates were established, and the area became home to many young families. The construction of major roads, such as the Nepean Highway and Beach Road, also made the area more accessible and allowed for further growth and development.

Parks and Recreation

The Beaumaris area is known for its parks and recreational facilities. The Beaumaris Conservation Society was established in the 1950s to protect the natural environment of the area. It has played an important role in the creation of the Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site, which is now one of the most important geological sites in Victoria.

The area also has a number of parks and reserves that are popular with locals and visitors alike. Some of the most popular parks include Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, which is a protected marine park that is home to a diverse range of marine life, and Beaton Reserve, which has playgrounds, picnic areas and sports facilities.
